Alice Cooper video bonus

Well it’s been a while since we’ve posted an update – be aware gears are ticking and projects are moving – but in the absence of a new update here’s an excerpt from the Alice Cooper event directed by Huw-J – School’s Out!

You can’t get the full holographic feel on your PC obviously – but it’s still pretty cool!

Hayena’s introduction to Rock Legend Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper

In May, Hayena creative Huw-J took another jump across the Pond to the sunny shores of LA where along with the boys of Activ8-3D, Huw-J- jumped back in the Director’s chair to shoot none other than the crowned prince of rock, ALICE COOPER in a music video related to the return and tour of the original band line up.

The whole gig was shot in the notorious Ben Kitay Studios. Studio 20. Hollywood. LA and was in the words of one set-hand ”A sheer blast”

The footage itself was preliminarily viewed early in may at an event in London, UK’s Battersea Power Station, but is still being put through some serious post production at the moment in readiness for a very special summer release.

So While Alice and the boys have been rocking up a storm on the festival scene the diligent and ever so tired boys over in post have been pounding the keyboards and Wacom tablets to get the footage rota-scoped and ready for some serious post production shenanigans.

Huw-J- was very happy to be back in LA doing what he was trained to do best, he commented that ”The shoot itself while not without the usual issues and problems connected to a live direction offered some interesting new challenges and mountains to climb”.

The key issue being that the way the whole thing was shot is counter intuitive to anything that he had been taught to do while under the mentorship of master director Ron Shelton. The camera was static, the profile flat and the action all set on one single platform. No mean feat then to direct a legendary 5 piece rock n roll band to perform on a restrictive 20 foot by 4 foot stage while keeping them to the script so the animated features can be added later by the post production crew.

However once the performers had been put through a basic run through with storyboards, and there had been a pre-dress-rehearsal, things went off without a hitch and in no time at all Alice and the band, consummate professionals that they are, worked the small platform with all the energy of an arena stage and gave a performance to a camera that was even better than the previous nights gig at the Revolver Golden Gods awards.

Backstage was a blur of gold lame trousers, old glory T-shirts, a boa constrictor with some of the best production team in the industry and a visit by Alice Cooper fan, Kung Fu panda himself, Jack Black!

Here Huw-J- just wants to say a big thank you to all of the production team, the guys at Ben Kitay studios, Alice Coopers whole team who were amazing, and all involved. not everything runs smoothly but hey that’s Rock N’ Roll!

Kate & William – A Very Public Love Story

Hayena Studio’s very own colourist Owen Jollands has just finished putting the finishing touches to Markosia’s latest release in time for the Royal Wedding – “Kate & William – A Very Public Love Story”. Written by Rich Johnston and with artwork from industry heavy-weights Mike Collins and Gary Erskine. Owen has pulled out all of the stops and forgone sleep, food and the company of his good lady to do justice to Gary and Mikes artwork and bring his colours to the table. With the final flourish from Ian Sharman, providing the lettering and fitting the finished package together, orders have been flying in to Markosia from across the globe, along with an unprecedented amount of media interest.

With features in the Daily Mail, Metro, Guardian and other UK newspapers getting the ball rolling, it wasn’t long before the creation of this book reached global newspaper distribution, and then global TV news coverage.

For Owen the icing on the cake has been the feature in the Cartoon Museum’s new exhibition Love a la Mode with two of his colour pieces alongside Gary and Mikes line art. Grab your copy of the graphic novel or the comics now and be surprised at just how awesome a love story can be!

In the wake of his steam-rolling success at the Brits, to kick off the Tinie Tempah 2011 Tour his Production Management wanted to overhaul the artwork for the track ‘Wonderman’. So Emile Freeman Approached Hayena Studios to give the tour Video a more heroes with an Urban feel,

Once the designs were confirmed by Mr Tempah and his team, with the Ray Bans firmly in place the Team at Hayena set about running up a basic script then layouts and black and whites, these were approved and then Hayena ran up a Video Directorial to be followed so that the Previous incarnation of his video could be tied into the tour video. Once that was established the art was vectored and coloured, sent over to Emile and placed into an after effects / final cut document where it was edited to match the Directorial and the Track.

The response to the video was great and there and there are plans for further development in both video and print. so watch this space….

Also in production on the music video scene at Hayena are Viral video Storyboards for Hip Hop Rap innovator and beat master ‘Labrynth’ as well as brand artwork and design for upcoming Rapper and Hayena team member ‘Stock’ and a very special graphic novel for punk skate band ‘Bowling for soup’….
